Through the local distributor Gersal, AVK Válvulas has supplied valve solutions for two renewable energy facilities in the Girona region of Spain. The projects demonstrate how reliable flow control contributes to efficient production of biogas and biomethane from agricultural and industrial waste, supporting the circular economy and helping reduce CO₂ emissions.
Biomethane production at the APERHAM plant
The APERHAM plant located in Galliners, Girona, processes 30,000 m³ of slurry and other industrial waste annually for the production of biomethane. This renewable energy source is currently supplied to filling stations and is expected to be injected directly into the natural gas grid in the future as a renewable fuel.
The plant also features its own energy generation through a 190 kVA engine, contributing to a more efficient operation.
AVK gate valves (13 pcs series 06/84, DN100-DN200) and Orbinox knife gate valves (8 pcs DN150, with pneumatic actuators) were supplied to the project. These products facilitate reliable and precise flow control under demanding operating conditions, contributing to operational reliability and supporting the successful biomethane production process.
Biogas production at the Recria plant
AVK Válvulas and Gersal have also supplied valves for the Recria biogas plant located in Vilanant, Girona. The facility produces 200 m³ of biogas per day, contributing to the development of the circular economy and helping reduce CO₂ emissions.
The biogas is generated through the decomposition of livestock slurry and agro-industrial waste from local manufacturing facilities. It can be upgraded and injected into the conventional natural gas network, in which case it becomes biomethane – renewable methane that can also be used as a biofuel in vehicles designed for this purpose. The companies responsible for the design of the plant, APERGAS and ASSA, which belong to the same industrial group that carried out the installation, already operate vehicles powered by methane.
